April 24, 2010

Time Warner Center

I woke up at 6AM this morning. I still don’t have a job. But thank God! It’s Saturday! At least I can pretend and feel free to enjoy the day. It is the weekend, after all.

I spent time at my computer all morning looking for someone selling planes. I start to make a few calls then realized it was Saturday.

Ric grew restless and wanted to go for “The Walk”. It seems to be the most productive thing we do nowadays. It’s a guilt free pleasure. Besides it was a gorgeous spring day and was going to rain the next three days. We left around 10:30am and decided to walk down Broadway to 59th Street. That particular route is always my suggestion because there is a Borders’ at the Time Warner Center. It is rare that we both agree to it for it is a daunting 63-block walk; approx. 4 miles. Once there, we walk along the overpriced stores and see no one buying anything. I am all for capitalism to a degree. However, it’s the designers & retailers who violate the slim rules of capitalism by putting a price tag on a pair of Bermudas that would ordinarily feed a family of 5 for a month that bother me. I mean in this economy when people are hurting so why would one want to flaunt expensive clothing as a badge of honor? I am confused and I don’t get it! Such a waste of money!

I like to go to the bookstore best. Today, like always, I feast my eyes on the vast number of books stored in the rows upon rows of shelves and revel in the scent of fresh books. I read a lot of romance novels. It’s a phantasmagoric way to immerse yourself in a world that rarely ever is; an escapist’s route if you will but I like them…little colorful books with covers depicting beautiful men and women in period costumes…like jujubes, they are. Growing up I read them all. All genres, I mean. Now, I don’t want to read about other people’s angst or their biographies nor their fictitious tales that end being adapted as movie scripts. I have exhausted the Classics and since all classical authors are dead and gone none of them is writing any more of those. I like the romance genre! But the economy (I stamp my foot here), it is not allowing me to buy them the way I used to a few months back. Also, some of the authors are getting to be tedious. The unknowns write fabulous stories to start. Once they become famous and have to turn in more books required by their contracts, the stories and writing styles turn to crap. You cannot believe they were written by the same author. Anyway, it’s a good thing since I am running out of space in my apartment. I am learning to buy selectively and only look for my favorites. I did not find any today. I did, however, buy a book on English grammar. I needed a refresher course, besides it was only $5.95 and with the discount I got it for about $4 bucks. It was the cheapest book on the shelf. I realized why this was so when I got home. The cover had a picture of the Union Jack. Ah! I said to myself, English grammar, not American English. It was well and good since that’s the only kind I was taught 40 years ago. I soon realized that it was a mistake to have purchased it. All it did was show up how very bad I am in recognizing parts of speech, sentences and clauses. I was left with my head buzzing with nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns, prepositions, adverbs and so on. I thought of returning it but discarded the thought immediately. I may need it again in a few years from now when I could possibly suffering from Alzheimers and have forgotten what a noun is. Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! I know I shouldn’t joke about it but, let me please…

We took a bus back up to 122nd Street and decided to go to Max Soha our favorite Italian restaurant that does great pasta dishes for about $9-$10. We order a half a carafe of “Primitivo”, an Italian red. I had rigatoni with eggplant and Ric ordered Linguine with white clam. As usual they were both delicious judging by the fact that we cleaned off every bit scarp off our plates.

Completely exhausted by the long walk and lulled by the good food and wine we returned home by 3pm. A good time to take a nap! It will only be a 5-10 minute one; time enough to wake up to the Yankees playing ball with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. I love saying that… Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim…We won!

I could not possibly eat dinner after that enormous lunch so did not cook any. Ric’s always such a good sport about it. He’ll forage and find something to munch on.

We are both growing older and our taste in TV is changing too. We actually watch, with enthusiasm, two BBC sitcoms on Channel 13: Keeping Up Appearances and As Time Goes By, that are aired one after the other. They are tame and gentle shows and leave one with a feeling of well being. All right! All right! I admit we also watch Family Feud.
